Youth Disability Supplement: Eligibility, Application, and Payment Details



This supplement provides additional support to those already receiving Disability Support Pension (DSP), Youth Allowance, or ABSTUDY. Who Can Get It:

 

To be eligible for the Youth Disability Supplement, you must meet certain criteria:

You are under 21 years old and receiving Disability Support Pension (DSP).

You are under 22 years old and receiving Youth Allowance as a job seeker, full-time student, or Australian Apprentice, or receiving  ABSTUDY  as a full-time student or Australian Apprentice.

You have an illness, injury, or disability that prevents you from working 30 or more hours per week and is expected to last more than 2 years.

 

How to Get It: You do not need to apply separately for the Youth Disability Supplement. The supplement will be automatically assessed when you apply for Disability Support Pension, Youth Allowance, or ABSTUDY. However, if you do not wish to receive the supplement, you must inform the authorities either by visiting a service centre or call the Disability, sickness and carers line, Sickness, and Carers Line.

 

Once your eligibility is determined, you will be notified by mail about the start date and the amount of supplement you will receive. Check the reviews and appeals

How Much You Can Get: The maximum amount of Youth Disability Supplement you can receive is $153.50 per fortnight. This supplement is paid in addition to your main income support payment and is subject to certain limits depending on your primary payment type.

 

If you are on Disability Support Pension (DSP), the total amount you receive each fortnight cannot exceed what someone older than 21 would receive on DSP. Additionally, the supplement is tax-exempt for DSP recipients.

If you are on Youth Allowance or ABSTUDY, the total amount you receive each fortnight cannot exceed what someone older than 22 would receive on JJobSeeker Payment.. However, recipients of Youth Allowance or ABSTUDY may be subject to tax on the supplement.

 

Income and assets tests are applied to the Youth Disability Supplement, similar to those applied to your main payment. For recipients of Youth Allowance or ABSTUDY,  parental income test may also be considered in the assessment.
