Surry Hills Library

Surry Hills Library

The library's location itself holds historical significance; the land was first granted in the 1790s, with Major Joseph Foveaux receiving 105 acres, establishing Surry Hills Farm. Foveaux Street, nearby, is named in his honor. Commissary John Palmer later acquired this land, adding to his own 90-acre grant. This area, west of the established Sydney Cove settlement boundary (1792), was deemed ideal for farming and granted to military officers and free settlers, laying the foundation for the present-day Surry Hills.

he library itself provides a wealth of modern resources and services:

Convenient Technology: Print, copy, and scan services are readily available using your library membership card or a casual-use ticket from the self-service kiosk. Self-service computers, including desktops and laptops (some with Adobe Creative Cloud), offer convenient access to technology. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout.

Dedicated Spaces: Numerous study desks provide quiet, well-lit areas for focused work or study. A dedicated children's area offers a fun and engaging space for young readers, complemented by baby change facilities.

Added Amenities: Current newspapers are available for browsing. A recycling station near the entrance conveniently accepts batteries, mobile phones, light bulbs, and small electronics.

Beyond its modern amenities, Surry Hills Library plays a vital role in the neighborhood's cultural life. It serves as a central location for discovery and collaboration, reflecting the dynamic character of Surry Hills, built upon a rich historical foundation.
